With the Eevees we have a family that now spans nine Pokemon, and only Espeon has a more interesting background than "generic super-safe cat-thing with generic XX-type parts", with that whole Egyptian shorthair thing it has going on.

Yes, Pikachu gets pushed a lot. It's also got quite a bit more going for it than a sorry series of palette swaps. Even the Pika-clones we get every generation still shake things up a bit with the base species and stats. And no matter how hyped they are
they really aren't, you will never see someone sweep the league tournament in the anime using only a Pika platoon.
As for the god-legends, they're supposed to look alien compared to other Pokemon. I shouldn't have to explain why that is.
