Could a main line Pokemon game ever go outside the classic Grass-Water-Fire starter formula?

Is starting with pure Psychic/Fighting/Dark the way to go?

Any other element "trios" that could work?

The easy way for GF would probably be Psychic/Fighting/Dark and then their fully evolved forms would get Grass/Water/Fire, an inverse of the XY starters.

Remember that the trio is there for a reason, it introduces nubs to type advantages. Fire Water Grass are immediately understandable - Fire burns Grass etc.
Because of that I see no reason for them to ever deviate. It's not a big deal as they can change the typings when they evolve like they started doing with Sinnoh.

The COULD, but they won't. There are a number of good reasons to stick with this formula

1. Tradition
2. All of the types have a consistent rock-paper-scissors relationship in weakness and resistance
3. It is the easiest type relationship to remember and understand
4. Secondary typings can still make for interesting starters and relationships between them(assuming they stop giving us fighting types so consistently, particularly fire/fighting.)

Fire at around 300C can vaporize water(Did you now that Pyroars fire is hotter than the surface of the fucking sun yet water still harms that majestic son of a pussy)
Pressured water can destroy trees.Plants absorb water but water would actually destroy plants easier than rocks since plants are less dense than rocks.

Couldn't they just have the Grass/Fire/Water starters, as well as a (eg.) Steel/Ice/Ground 'starter' trio in the same game? (which could be used for a sequel or post-game)
It'd keep the formula, as well as transitioning to the new one for later generations without being too much of a change

I think the Grass>Water>Fire trio is really good and serves as an easy way for kids to visualize the rules of super effectiveness. I do wish we had more situations like Pokemon Yellow where we had a choice for a 'single stage' Pokemon. I know Pikachu doesn't really count, but, you couldn't evolve him in that game so. Like a game that lets you start with something like a Zangoose would be pretty neat. Also, starting with Eevee would be awesome and should be done more often.

The problem with starting with an Eevee is the game dictates when you evolve.
Starting with a single or dual-stage would be cool for a spinoff.

A choice between a 3 stager, a 2 stager and a single stager would be cool.

But I quite like the concept of starters that aren't based on 1 type triangle, e.g. a Fire type that may or may not gain a second typing as it evolves but is clearly primarily Fire typed.
Starting with a pokemon thats designed to have traits of both its typings would be neat.

Why are either of those things relevant? Electric is supposed to be super effective against the flying/ice one so that isn't an issue and water types learn ice moves to deal with grass pokemon, so that isn't a new issue, either.

Dark/Fighting/Psychic isn't as clear. Plus, it's not a triangle since Dark is immune to Psychic.

But for that we need to rip off the ideia of player's first pokemon being give but a professor.

Make the mom could give the player it's first mon, and maybe it could give the other two mons to player's twin brothers...

There are other elemental trios and the idea is interesting, but it will never happen. They have to make the game accessible and intuitive for a new group of kids every generation, and fire/water/grass is easily the most intuitive. I would like if they kept making elemental trios with their secondary types like in gen VI, which was cool. I would like it even more if the secondary triangle went the other direction, like fire/psychic, water/fighting, grass/dark.

Really, the player isn't everyone.
We can say every protagonist by far is some professor's assistant, and ever* assistant get a start from it's professor.

It could be an interesting thing to have a post game where the starters are different and all the leaders and elites are different and you can't use the pokemon you caught during your first time through. The only question is what does the game do with the old pokemon? There's have to be some sort of limbo area where you COULD use your older pokemon online until you beat the game against but you can't use them in game... That would be weird.

Ice would be the worst possible type for a starter to be - particularly mono ice. A starter needs to be able to take some hits while you're leveling up and learning the game. Ice is the worst defensive type in the game. It could never work.
