The reason is simply supply and demand. Supply is sky high because everyone had or has a shoebox/binder full of old pokemon cards. Demand is low because the two types of people that spend chunks of money on cards are collectors and competitive players. Pokemon has no official legacy format, so competitive players don't want old cards and collectors only want rare and/or mint condition card.
