The story made me cringe, it felt like it was really trying too hard, and they "backed out" at the last moment. "Hurr in fact there was no moral dilemma all along, the nice controversial rival becomes your friend and dennis was a lying sack of shit all along"
At least the Aqua/Magma/Galaxy leaders believed what they preached. And to some extent rocket too, though they didn't preach anything, Giovanni never hid his goals.
The mons were nice though. Except the very first ones you could get. That's not the case in every gen : pidgeot doesn't suck, and neither does Poochyena. But the dog/cat/rat trio felt really bland, and you couldn't get the regional bird till after the 1st gym.
The colors they used were also too tame.
Altogether, it wasn't bad, just bland.
