Fusions (either mon/mon or trainer/mon) are the obvious answer, so I'm going to say Pokemon that can be partnered with smaller, not-quite Pokemon creatures that give them powerful fifth moves that Pokemon can't learn any other way, but at the expense of a hold item.

Think Mini-cons in Transformers, or some such.

Fusing is the most obvious choice, but I don't want it.

I don't even really think the series needs to add much more.

All it really needs to do is fine tune what it has, bring back the good features that it lost, and get rid of the things it doesn't need.

Maybe do something better with the story.

If they can do all that consistantly, I think I'll be satisfied with just adding new pokemon and a new story, some moves, and not much else every generation.
