The Pokemon Adventures Chapter Hacks.

Unfortunately Red is the only one that covers the entire chapter, and the postgame the hacker wrote is fanfic tier at best, but the part where it follows the manga is great. Green Chapter is better in my opinion, but it only goes up to Lavender Town.

It's only a 4 Gym Beta from all the way back in 2010. As far as I know, he hasn't released any patches or updates to it like has with Brown in that same timespan. He did release what was called a nearly complete dungeon near Halloween and it looked good.

I'm personally holding off because of the fact he updated Brown so much and shuffled a lot of things around in said updates. You can probably play the 2010 4Gym and get a general feel for how the game is going to be, but I don't expect it to be an exact copy of it.

Yes there is. We used to have a general for hacks before it died, people gathered up a list in that time.

I don't think it sorts out complete from incomplete, but I think most of the incomplete hacks are marked as such in their description.

If you want something with balls-to-the-walls insane difficulty that is pretty damn lengthy, reborn is the way to go.
Otherwise any generic gen3 hack is a good place to start.

I've said it before (though not in this thread yet) and I stick by it, Brown is a really good vanilla hack. New region, updated mechanics like new types (including some non-canon types, though those are really rare) and the phys/spec split, some Gen 2 and Gen 4 Pokémon added to the mix, but it's the same "8 badges and a villainous team" story as most games so it's not alien. I think it works good as someone's first hack, gives you a taste of what it can do while still feeling mostly vanilla.

Haven't played Light Platinum, but when I played Reign of Legends (god-awful hack, stay far, far away from it) Ash Ketchum kept appearing repeatedly and ended up being the Champion (using his Sinnoh team). Approach with caution; though, RoL is shitty for a lot of reasons besides Ash.

Life of Guardians is certainly his most passable hack.

I mean it's not without its -hefty- share of problems, but it's certainly the best Jagold has done.

Any main game (including XY) > LoG > shit > RoL > liquid shit >>> Rescue Rangers

I could possibly write a book on how back this trilogy is despite the passable third hack, I still have the notes from my playthrough, but this is a thread about good hacks, not bad, so I won't.

Even Jagold admitted himself that his first hack (Ruby Destiny - Rescue Rangers) was "all glitchy and buggy" and remade it as Reign of Legends.
It took him three tries to get the formula for Ruby Destiny right but he finally did with Life of Guardians. Like you said, it has quite a few problems but it's better than other hacks to say the least.

Reign of Legends came first. It's pretty obvious that it was his first hack since half the locations are almost completely unedited from Hoenn towns (Slateport, Sootopolis, etc.).

Yeah, I've seen him state his dissatisfaction with his first two hacks, he seems like a good guy willing to admit mistakes, I'm just not a fan of his work. I'm definitely going to check out Broken Timeline when it's finished to see if he's continued to improve. Though I definitely don't consider Life of Guardians better than hacks like Brown, Dark Energy, etc.
