It's only hard when you're a stupid kid, I guess, because I never really knew about Machop, and I remember not being able to find a Heracross easily, and then it didn't even really have any good moves.
If it wasn't for my Croconaw, I probably would have had major problems.

nigger the rules of nuzlocke are that you can only get the first pokemon of an area. Goldenrod city is an entirely new area, so you're perfectly fine to trade. Granted if you're adding a no trades clause, it will be difficult, but only because you made it so.

I feel like I missed out on challenging gym leader battles, when I was younger I would always evolve my starter at the first patch of grass I got to and wouldn't leave it until then, and I would also make sure to have a fully evolved starter before the second gym leader. Starter was always way stronger than everyone else

Maybe. I thought weaknesses were based on individual Pokemon not types, or more weak to one than another. Ialways used grass on Poliwag and never electric, so I figured its ONEweakness was grass

Yeah that karate chop is really going to do a lot of damage. It is totally not going to get flattened by stomp.

Either run Geodude, level up your starter and/or Twave with Mareep.

You could have just used rage with crocanaw. Clafairy usually uses doubleslap which does hardly any damage and powers up your rage, allowing you to kill it quickly. By the time miltank comes out you can 2-3 hit it.

You could have also used geodude. You could have also used ghastly. You could have also used twave mareep/flaaffy.

i didnt even trade for the machop or go find a heracross and I still fucking beat her. If you beat all the trainers up till that point shes really not difficult. If you want to just rush through the game, she will be difficult because you skipped a lot of trainers.

Whitney is hard because she's using a pokemon with much higher base stats then whatever stage 2 starter + beedrill + whatever other shit you have at this point. By the time you realize you can't hurt miltank fast enough, she heals, gets a rollout going, and you're wiped. No one brings heracross because you have to go out of your way to find one and raise it up before the gym, something a new player would never think to do and a veteran player would scoff at since he already trained up his balanced team. And let's face it, no one ever uses the shitty-nickname trade pokemon like MUSCLE.

The only problem was the impreparation due to I don't know what kind of expectations and kids that usually tend to solely use attacking moves over status and stat reducing ones.

I would have added a Stantler to her team as well. But GF was so shit at giving proper team to the gym leaders and elite4, Will didn't even use Girafarig or Slowking.

Scizor was still useful because of the Steel type and defensive stats, Scyther only had Wing Attack and some irrelevant speed stats since ingame speed didn't matter a lot in a game and gen full of shit tier moves and no special/physical split. But then Scizor required trades.

And yea I'll admit to getting fucked up by that miltank a few times before I got gud. It wasn't as bad as all the memers make it out to be. Brock in red/blue with a charmander was brutal. Crasher Wake in platinum was the last time I lost to a gym leader. Dat Gyarados.

Normally you don't need anything but knowledge of type advantage ingame.

If we're talking about gen2, I don't think anybody taught rock smash (20 atk) to one of his main pokemon.

The hard part in this fight was, that you were allowed to fight her the moment you reached Goldenrod City.
I'd say at this point of the game you have about 2 lvl 19 pokemon, 3 lvl17s or 4 lvl15s.
Your first pokemon will already be severely damaged by Clefairy and Miltank's roll out sweeps the rest of your team. If you're lucky it will miss, but then it will just use milk drink or super potion and start with roll out again.
Now you have the option to fight her 5-10 times again until she uses the dumbest combination of attacks possible and you're lucky to win
or do it the way it's meant to be and go north, clear the area and fight all trainers until Sudowoodo blocks your way ...and voilà your team should be strong enough to fight her.

Huh, I remember it being difficult. Then again, I was 5. Either I was completely incompetent or I remember it being as a way bigger fiasco than it actually was. Probably both.

I was talking about my first time through each game btw, I can beat any gym leader easily now because I now know what to expect. But that rollout took me by surprise and wrecked flaffy and pidgeot. By the time croconaw came out the steamroll had already begun. Or with crasher wake His gyarados's ice fang wrecked my leafeon that I thought would carry me. And in the case of Brock, I was totally underleveled and pikachu couldn't do shit. In hindsight I would have done those battles a lot differently.

unrelated to you guys but an attitude that annoys me in these threads are the bulbapedia heroes who don't understand why you didn't know every weakness, move, pokemon location, and gym leader's team on your first playthrough.

and even if you do know all that. Why would you backtrack just to get that one Pokemon that's effective against this gym leader and grind it up to a reasonable level just to toss it after the fight again.
Simply training the pokemon I already have and plan to keep using is more benefitial and probably faster anyway.

Geodude with Selfdestruct makes it a walk-over. In fact, Geodude handles all three first gyms by itself, especially the bug gym.

One round in HG, I decided to some set-up with Defense Curl with Sandslash on the Clefairy. That worked wonderful when the Metronome used Healing Wish.

I tend to start pokemon games during the morning so I'd get to sprout tower around midday. Didn't even know about the gastly in sprout tower until my most recent nuzlocke. I caught one and it died before I got to whitney anyways.

Gen II Whitney IS harder than every other gym leader because of that. Which other Gym Leader do you have to be specifically prepared for (or just overleveled) to not get your ass handed to you? The fact that everyone's naming hard checks and counters is an affirmation of her absurd difficulty for the typically 10-year old brain (at the time). Yeah, Geodude worked, Flaafy worked, Dig worked, and Machop worked. How many of us were competitive or even competent as kids our very 1st Gen II run? And even if you were, how many of you considered Gym Leaders to be a special occasion we needed to beat with our favorite pokemon and not some one-off counter to Uddertits? Goodness.

I remember Misty's Starmie being hard, cause it was fucking level 20. And if you chose Charmander and got a Bellsprout or an Oddish, chances are they won't be high level enough to take her out.

This contradicts her starmie in the anime hilariously though, which was taken out by a fucking graveler.

Bugsy also didn't even use Pineco or Yanma, not even Butterfree or Beedrill instead of the cocoons.
I mean both Kanto bugs were still shit movepool wise and BST wise, not even a Shuckle or a Paras that was found in the nearest route.
Chuck could have used either Hitmontop or Heracross in the first match. Not even a Misdreavus on Morty's team. Pryce had no Lapras either. Very debatable choiced because none of those Pokemon were intimidating or extreme threats back then when the level up movepools were absolute trash and the lack of phsyical/special split on moves and types balanced every mon. And Whitney could have perfectly used a Clefable too at that point of the game where it would have been still a shitmon to take down, I was more surprised at that character with Nidoking and Nidoqueen nearby Mt. Mortar.

You had all of Gen I to figure out how Ghosts work. Then, Spite was the ONLY problem and the gym trainers spoiled it for you, so you were expecting it by the time Morty even shows up. Now to mention that before the phy/spc split, ghosts with just Ghost moves were pathetic. Yeah, Morty's gym was a pain in the ass but his actual battle wasn't a "fuck-this-shit-got-killed-again" affair like Whitney's. His gym just had a gimmick that made healing necessary.

not that hard at all really. You could also stall with bayleaf and I am pretty sure there are a few mons that learn will o wisp by that point anyway.
