Articuno was perfectly viable competitively as far as gen 3, being a decent support mon despite its typing. Sneaky pebbles and power creep without any buffs killed it.

Give it magic guard. This makes it able to withstand rocks as its primary problem, and on top of that, makes direct damage from moves the only means of killing it. With its 90/100/125 defenses, its one of the bulkiest things out there. And even with its less than stellar typing, its a monster at tanking things without poison or curse phasing it.

Give It technician. With its access to moves like frost breath, ancient power, and air slash it could do massive damage with great coverage. While never touching the OU area like its Magic guard counterpart, it would be a UU standard.

The Ice buff + snow warning. Posted a lot is the idea that Ice should resist flying and ground, and that hail should boost ice type defense by 50% like sandstorm does for Rock. With this Articuno would be a massive tank regardless of its typing, and able to roost without fear of quake. Also Brave bird resistance is nice.

Magic Guard would be nice for all 3 birbs. Zapdos hates toxic. Moltres is a legit good mon without pebbles. Articuno would still be kind of shit, but at least it wouldn't be completely outclassed by Regice.

Step 1: give it Magic Guard. Either as a 2nd Ability, or replace its HA. Doesn't matter either way.

Step 2: give it a Mega (or whatever they do in Gen 7) with Delta Stream. Hey presto, no more 4x Rock weakness, which goes a long way towards helping it with its supposedly defensive (90/100/125) role.

Now it can switch in without dying (although Stealth Rock isn't AS common on cart anymore), and can survive a bit longer while it's in.

It could do with some more moves, but that's a problem for another thread.

It's going to continue to be shit without a big change like that. It's a goddamn legendary, and it barely puts a dent in anything, and is knocked out by a stiff breeze.

It bugs me that they still haven't. The legendary birds cap at 580 bst, it should be at least 600 bst.
Hell, even 590 during the transition to XY would have been something.

I hear a lot of complaints about Articuno being a defensive Ice type. Why does it have to be used defensively?

Ability: Snow Cloak
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 SpD
Modest Nature
- Freeze-Dry
- Water Pulse
- Ancient Power
- Tailwind

This offensive Articuno set is both bulky and powerful, only lacking in speed which is made up by Tailwind. Freeze Dry/Water Pulse/Ancient Power provide perfect coverage while nailing in common Rock/Fire switch-ins, easily dealing with its weaknesses. If you manage to get an Ancient Power boost, it's pretty much game over right there. Freezes from Freeze Dry and Confusion from Water Pulse can be used to stall for time. Also, after boosting, Tailwind is not necessarily necessary any more unless you wish to outspeed truly quick pokemon, such as Sceptile.

They could also give it a second non-hidden ability. Like Magic Guard. You could get it on an Articuno from a previous gen via Ability Capsule. Pain in the ass, but you could.

I've won 120 on a battle maison team containing Articuno. Even against humans I win more than I lose.

When you ban OHKO moves it's gonna suck, and it does better 3v3 than 6v6. It's not viable in smogon's format but it's a fine pokemon in others.

Anon you are now mentioning an even more hated by GF trio where the Regice didn't even learn Freeze Dry or any even distribution move like Recover, all of these Regi. Sinnoh and Regigigas are their only chance this time when even their native region remakes didn't bother to buff them. And regardless Heal Bell, Pressure Sub staller and Roost alone laugh at the poor Regice.

I'm very sad about it, Articuno and all the three Regi are one of my fav legendary Pokemon.

here's how to fix articuno:
90/85/100/95/125/85 --> 90/80/95/125/95/95
now learns aeroblast
ice now DOESN'T have weakness to rock and resists flying
there, it's a kyurem with more defensive options, thanks to heal bell, defog and roost

Either Moltres or Zapdos.
Articuno had STAB Blizzard coming from 125 Spec, and Bubblebeam if needed to dispatch Rock/Ground mons without wasting Blizzard.

Zapdos and Moltres just have their STABs and normal attacks. Fire Blast coming from the same base packed a punch, but Fire wasn't a good attacking type back then, and Zapdos was stuck with Thunderbolt and Drill Peck because Thunder was awful.

Mewtwo is MRayquaza (or more) levels of bullshit, and Mew can run almost everything, making it hard to deal with.

This is incorrect, Articuno would easily set Sub CM with only focusing on its Defence, Zapdos would be a proper threat, Moltres would still enjoy choiced and 2-3 attacking moves with LO and Roost or just being choiced. Also Zapdos doesn't carry nor Hurricane or Air Slash, it got Zap Cannon as Gen5 event for obvious balancing reasons in a gen with easy permanent weather, its best Flying STAB are physical and the special is Air Cutter and Hidden Power.

Moltres' only gimmick was Fire Spin where Articuno had a better bulk and free Blizzard spam with broken Freeze mechanics. Zapdos was the best thanks to the "mixed" power thanks to Drill Peck, still hardwalled by every ground and rock user.
