Hey /vp/ i'm wanting to become a competitive pokemon trainer, i know about EVs, IVs, pokerus, how to breed. is there anything else i need to know to become a competitive pokemon trainer? which games are usually used for tournaments? what pokemon should i put on a team? any tips like those would be appreciated.
the pokemon games i have right now are emerald, soul silver, diamond, and black 2.

Official ones use the newest cart games and non official ones like Smogon ones just use simulators, with http://play.pokemonshowdown.com/ being the most popular

You'll need ORAS, OP, or Showdown if you don't want/can't a 3DS with the game. Official tournaments only use XY or ORAS for being the most recent ones.

It totally depends on your playstyle. You could be a gym leader, using pokemon of a single type, a balanced team of pokemon of mixed types, etc. You said your favourite was Snorlax, which is a good place to start as Snorlax is quite a decent pokemon.

Snorlax @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Gluttony
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Recycle
- Defense Curl
- Earthquake
- Rollout

This Snorlax set should fit well with any team. One of the major complaints is that Snorlax has no form of reliable healing, but with endless Sitrus Berries, you can heal back to full health in no time, while taking advantage of Snorlax's massive bulk. Defense Curl is used to patch up Snorlax's slightly lower defense stat, while Earthquake and Rollout give Snorlax virtual EdgeQuake coverage that allows it to dispatch most foes. Again, this set is designed to fit into any type of team easily. I recommend packing powerful special attackers like Mega-Pidgeot to deal with physical walls and strong Fighting-types, which Snorlax is weak to.

1.look up the 5th gen ou tier on smogon's site.
2.pick out 6 of those and make a team on showdown.
3.play the 6th gen ou tier
(if you come across a pokemon you like often, try to remember its movesets to use later)
After that you'll naturally get better.
(if you don't like ou try the lower tiers until you find a balance you like)

okay thanks!
my main worry is that ill think up a team i want, then put all the time and effort into breeding them to be about perfect, and taking all the time to EV train them to lv.100, only to find out the team sucks, any way to avoid this happening?
also since im an entomology major, any good bug pokemon?

I don't like it personally, but i always have heard volcarona is a powerhouse as well.

Scizor is good.
Volcarona can take a dump on things if it's given the chance. Be mindful of Stealth Rocks.
Scolipede can be used as a baton passer with speed boost, but it can also be used to set up and hit hard with Megahorn/Earthquake.

You only need to get to Lv: 50, training to Lv: 100 is pointless and a complete waste of time.

EVs have nothing to do with level.

Those games have been out of the competitive scope for about 2-3 years. Right now your best bet is getting a 3DS with pokemon ORAS (X&Y are not updated with the new megas so basically it would render it unusable for the current meta)

how long does it usually take to make a lv.50 ev trained team?

i believe the current most used 3 (4 if you count the 2 zards, but you can't have 2 megas so i wouldn't) are

You don't need to get up to 50 if you play on cart, they are automatically set to 50 in multiplayer.
Just EV train them and get the right moves. EV training shouldn't take more than 15 minutes per pokemon if you use hordes.

it takes 30 minutes to breed a pokemon with a ditto, 1 hour if you need an egg move, and EV training takes less than 20 minutes.

Its also important to know what format you wish to play in. There are many but to put It simple, there's singles, doubles and triples. Once you've decided which, then you should choose VGC 2015 (the official format) or smogon. Both have a differs set of rules, ill try and brief the differences but I urge you to look up all the rules by yourself.

VGC 2015 allows you to use any item (only once per team). It allows you to use any ability and move on a Pokemon (if the Pokemon has it in the current gen). It allows you to use every Pokemon other than a few legendaries which are too Overpowered. That is basically it, not much there.

Smogon is more complex as it is formed to try and make the game more balanced (for whiners who dislike it when they loose to something a bunch of times *cough* scald *cough*. They have a bunch of tiers, e.g OU, UU, RU, Ubers. Which are basically tiers that allow certain Pokemon in it depending on how good they are and how often they are used (look that up yourself). Many moves and abilities are banned, for example swagger, minimise and moody.

Smogon does however offer al large choice of formats such as 1v1, monotype and LC (I play them myself for fun).

Depending on the format your team should be build in different ways, it must follow the rules and you mist know of the common threats in the metagame.

Ok I suggest you start at doubles which is currently the most popular (and has most tournaments).

Just some tips:
-when you build a team, use http://www.pokemonshowdown.com to build and test it, its a free and very fun use where you can test your team very quickly and as many times as you want. This way you don't have to waste time on building useless Pokemon on your DS.
- Check out weather teams and trick room teams, they are very common in VGC, also you should have a way to counter TR and weather teams (e.g bring a Char Y).
-Other thing to look out for is having a taunter, and a defogger, they are very useful in the metagame (not necessary though if you feel your team is not affected much by it)

I can give more advice on what to bring In your team if you want

OP, i recommend playing around with only one of your pokemon's sets, and using 5 of smogon's sets (move to move, ev to ev) until you figure out the basics of team building and the viability of moves and abilities. Keep messing with the one custom (changing a move, its nature, etc) to find what works best for your playstyle, while also switching around the 5 smogon sets with other smogon pokemon or just other sets for those pokemon so you can try to find your playstyle (maybe you'll like having 4 sweepers, a bulky wall and a toxic staller, for example.)
Wait until you feel confident enough with your ability to make sets before you make a full team and just go at it.
You'll get there eventually, and when you find how you like to play, the matches seem a lot more enjoyable than just normal competitve matches

Yes! Doubles is a great format, it allows for more options such as weather teams, trick room teams, or other shenanighans.

Its not very different to singles, although you do need to be able to predict a lot and play more carefully, but all of that will come with a bit of practice
