Hello /vp/ Im the competitive beginner who's majoring in entomology from yesterday's thread.
After some research, recommendations from yesterday's thread, and some recommendations from some friends i think i have the pokemon i want on my team. i'm looking for some review and suggestions on my team, so far i have:
>Scizor, with Swarm
>Snorlax with Thick Fat
>Scolipede with Poison Point
>Starmie with Natural Cure
>Volcarona with Flame Body
>Mega-Heracross with Skill Link

Considering you're majoring in entomology, I would think you would have better Bug-types.

Durant is good, just usually not as good as Scizor. Scizor is stronger, has a better ability, and a better movepool. The only thing that Durant has over him is speed, which is partially mitigated by the fact that Scizor has a priority move.

If you want to use him, then by all means. Just be aware of what you're giving up to do it and how it'll affect the team.

Durant with Hustle and Hone Claws to recover its accuracy drop can really hit hard if you want to try that out, but just make sure it avoids special attacks at all costs.

Hey there! Its the guy who sent the small guide for building a team in your last thread. You seem to be doing well, so here is my take on what you have come up with:
Scizor - scizor has the ability technician, now technician is a very good ability which makes it so evey attack with 60 BP or less does x1.5 damage. This means that a 60 BP move turns into a 90 BP move. Now scizor makes use of that by a priority move that it has called bullet punch, thanks to technitian the move is a 60 BP priority move which is affected by STAB. This is very powerful, specially when it is powered by swords dance. So here is my reccomended set:
Scizor @ Shell bell
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Nature: Adamant
- Bullet punch
- Swords dance
- Defog
- Roost

The way to run this set it so stack up on swords dance, only one is needed, however 2 is optimal. You must find for the perfect time to set up, after that you spam Bullet punch. Defog is very useful to have in a team because it removes hazards, you will find out that hazards are very common in competitive, and they can really damage your team if you aren't ready for it. Finally there's roost, a move which gives you back 50% of HP back, now this is completely optional, if you plan in using it for doubles then I reccomend you get protect on it instead. As for the item, you can also use Leftovers, life orb, or sitrus berry, depends on your preference.

I will give more info about the other Pokemon soon

Of course, if you are doing this on Cartridge then Defog is impossible, so use Bug Bite from Move Tutors.

Durant @ Focus sash
Ability: Hustle
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 HP
Nature: (cant remember the name its +Spe - SpA)
-Hone Claws
-Iron head
-Knock Off
-Stone edge

Now first thing to know about this set is, You MUST set up with Hone claws first, dont worry about getting hit, focus sash takes care of that. It is a great sweeper with a lot of good coverage moves (if you plan on changing any, replace stone edge). To make sure it sweeps, put it against a slower Pokemon, and watch out for priority.

Fucking awful. Outclassed by technician. You should either go leftovers and defencive with defog/roost/bullet punch/U-Turn, or with a Choice Band and Super Power/Aerial Ace and then the last two moves from the last suggestion. Always have bp and uturn

Good! Experiment with what works. Body Slam should be your main attack, though

Lol no. Use this as a clean up sweaper, with life orb, speed boost, and something along the lines of Protect/Poison Jab/Earthquake/ Mega Horn

Nice. If you go with rapid spin, make the scizor choice band. Then, just start of with a Timid leftover attacker with Scald/Psyschock/Ice Beam/Rapid spin. Its predictable and bland, but easier to use than the reflect type set

Get rid of it. But right choice of ability. Gale Wings leftover swords dance Talon Flame would be a better choice, and the same stealth rock weakness

Haha its not like you have a choice with ability for a mega, but pre mega evolution, go Guts. I guess its okay, but mega gyrados would be better

Quick review of the rest of the team:
Snorlax- I will need more info about which way you want to run snorkax, it is a very wide ranged Pokemon which can be used in many ways, onlce you know what you want it to be used for, then I can reccomend a set

Scolipede- now this Pokemon I don't know much about, it is mainly used as a baton pass Pokemon, now I don't know if you want to use this but if you can pull it off and baton pass to M herracross, then you are set, I doubt much can stop it. Baton pass is a move which basically allows you to switch into another Pokemon, however when you switch, that also includes the stat changes, so all Scolipede has to do is get its stats. So I reccomend you give it protect, substitute, swordsdance and iron defence (not sure if it gets that). As for ability get it speed boost. This ability (like technician) is one of those abilities you should look out for as they are very useful, as you play competitive more, you will find out all these abilities. Black sludge as item, and for EVs id say you make it bulky, but I don't know how scoliopedes stats are, again I reccomend you ask for someone else's help for that one as I don't know much about it.

No, I'm saying that theres still a time before mega evolution where the heracross is just plain heracross. I'm saying if you get burnt, say on the switch in, you could use standard hera with a guts boost in attack, rather than being mega evolved and having attack halfed

Starmie - A good special sweeper, nothing too special there

Starmie @ life orb
Ability: Natural cure

Volcarona, another special sweeper, but this one needs to set up.

Volcarona @ leftovers (or shell bell)
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 HP / 4 Spe
- Quiver dance
- Bug buzz
- Heat wave
- Protect / roost
Set up quiver dance, however dont get too greedy, one or two is enough. It sweeps beautifully in doubles.

Snorlax (wall)- now there are many ways of setting up snorlax as a wall, but the simplest would be this set:

Snorlax @ Chesto berry
Ability: Immune
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Def
Nature: (+ Def - Spe)
-Stockpile
-Curse
-Crunch
-Rest

When this think is set up it will WRECK. But it is very hard, and it will take you a while to get used to it. Here's how it goes: Step 1 - Stockpile as many times possible (3 times max) when you start to get low use rest (note rest will go AFTER your opponent) and the chesto berry will wake you up. Step 2 - set up on curses, your attack will increase and since you are super bulky it will be very hard to knock you out, again when you get close to dying use rest again, but note that this time you will have to wait 3 turns while you are asleep. Step 3 - Once you have set up on curse enough, spam crunch and haul ass.

You may notice that I chose immunity over Thick fat, this is because when you are bulky like snorlax your enemy will try to toxic you to break you down, so immunity prevents that. Also dont set it up on fighting Pokemon, kill the fighting poke first, then set up

As for the mega, M heracross is awesome at least Imo, but it needs some sort of set up.

If you are planning on going with doubles:
Remove scolipiede and bring something with helping hand,its the quick boost that M herracross needs instead of baton pass, which doesn't work well in doubles, preferably a support Pokemon. Out of the top of my head I reccomend meowstic ( I can give you a set if you want. Meowstic also has quick guard and can set up screens which also help the snorlax set up.

You could also go in a different direction and go semi trick room. For example change solipiede with a cresselia to dmset up TR, have some sort of fake out Pokemon like maybe harimaya (replases starmie). Then replace volcarona for something slower like Heatran.

Scizor does well overall although you should consider switching it with aegislash, it bulkier and gets the job done easily.

For Scizor, you want Technician. That gives you powered up Bullet Punches and Bug Bites. The two best sets for Scizor:

I don't have much experience using Snorlax, but I'm aware of the infamous Curselax set. Use Leftovers with Curse, Rest, Sleep Talk, and Body Slam. Won't do anything to Ghosts, but damn annoying to play against.

>Scolipede
Use Speed Boost Scolipede. Always use it. For items, I'd recommend Black Sludge or mental Herb. Scolipede can do a variety of different things depending on what you're trying to do with it, but you want to have Baton Pass, that's for sure. Good moves for Baton Passing are Swords Dance, Iron Defense, and Substitute. You probably want Protect too, since it means free Speed Boosts and potentially free Black Sludge recovery. Scolipede learns a couple offensive moves, but you're better off using for support, since you already have a bunch of other Bug type attackers. In you situation, I would use it purely as a support piece.

Since you got all those bugs, Rapid Spin is a must. Starmie also has some decent offensive moves if you're going for a hyper-offense angle, in which case I would suggest Life Orb with Surf or Scald (Scald can burn stuff, but Surf does a little more damage and can OHKO some threats Scald can't), Ice beam, and Thunderbolt. You can also use Starmie for support with Reflect and Light Screen, in which case Leftovers would be your preferred item.

Volcarona depends on if you want to use it as a bulky setup sweeper, or as a fast setup sweeper. Either way, you're using Quiver Dance and Bug Buzz on both sets. If you're going for Bulky, use Fiery Dance and Roost. If you're going for fast, use Fire Blast and Giga Drain.

>Mega Heracross
You definitely want Close Combat. Arm Thrust is crap. Depending on whether or not you like Swords Dance, you could do a set with that, but you already have a lot of setup on this team, so I'd just use it as an all-out attacker with Close Combat, Bullet Seed, Rock Blast, and either Megahorn or Pin Missile, depending on which one you like better. Pin Missile more accurate, but does less damage when resisted, and Heracross is likely to force switches, so I'd use Megahorn.

It's like easy mode for beginners since it requires so little prediction. It's scientific, rather than guessing what you're gonna have to deal with, you just outright switch into something to deal with them after they do all their stuff.

It's not entirely optimal for higher level play, but U-Turn was a tool for me to use to learn how to play the game back when I started, which is the kind of thing that will immensely help OP.
