The ropes are pulled so tightly that the bridge literally cannot sink in the middle. It looks like the bridge should sink, having no middle support, and being made of linked logs, the ropes are just that tight. Though, from an engineering standpoint, that is unsound, as it puts unnecessary force on the ropes, lowering the bridge's overall maximum capacity.
