You sons of bitches with your Clovers and PokeAus's got me wanting to make a goddamn Pokemon fangame.

So here's my starter town. What do you think? Needs work? Fine as it is? Delete it and start over?

Nice, most of towns tend to have the exit at north, also a pond or a little channel wouldn't be bad either. Also the grass path looks too artificial like in Gen1, make at least the town confined grass path more randomized like.
Flowers and shit are optional I guess

Feels a little bit too little. "towns" with only 3 buildings are not a thing in real life, so why should they be in pokemon.

Fair enough. I just don't want to fall into the trap a lot of fangames do, where they put in far more detail than you'd ever see in a real Pokemon game.

I guess I could always go Prof. Elm-style and have the Professor's house there too...

More detail doesn't need to be a bad thing, just don't overdo it, don't force it. Maps can be very detailed and still very good when ot fits the theme, simpler maps can be effective too as long as they don't feel boring, it's up to the creator to judge anyways.

Probably not. I'm going with Gen 6-style battlers, and I think making animated fakemon sprites that look like 3d models might be a little bit too diifficult.

Basically, it was a toss-up between animated Kalos mons and Megas (as all the sprites for those are static and incomplete), or fakemons.

What if you put a single or three frail rocks you can Rock Smash as soon as you get the HM so that have 50% to catch Geodude, 5% to catch Shuckle or Dwebble? Or a White Apicot Tree. I only got that you'd like to use a Gen6 nat dex in the end.

I'd just add a bit more of details, maybe a couple of houses and a little river in the south, with a single bridge out of town.

Give Typhlosion Earth Power and Thunderbolt, it's a volcano mon. It needs a replacement for thunderpunch and thunderclouds form around volcanoes. Maybe give Earth Power to Meganium too. Feraligatr's fine.

Hell, give them megas too.

You probably wont take my suggestion but put a stripper club in game. If youre playing as a female youll get a certain amount of money based on the number of badges you have or some shit like that.

Why isn't there a RomHack general? More people around here might work on them if there was a community.

I've always wanted to make one, but I'm not sure what I'd base it on. I've always thought it would be cool to explore an earlier time in the Pokemon world. Maybe set something in turn of the century England. Toss in some steampunk elements to explain Pokeballs and whatever. Thoughts?

There'll be plenty of farms. There's a cattle farm alongside a main road not far from where I live, and that was a deciding factor in getting me to do this. It would make a perfect route.

As for Mareep shearing, that's not a bad idea. I've been thinking that Furfrou shearing might be doable, as soon as I can find some gifs of its other forms (I've been using this site, but they're pretty incomplete: http://www.pkparaiso.com/xy/sprites_pokemon.php).

Romhack generals pop up once or twice a month but they don't garner enough attention to have a lot of board presence. Most often they end up being used by people doing LPs of already existing romhacks.

There's just not enough people working on their own projects for romhack threads that aren't aus/clover.

ROM Hack Generals were just used for shitposting about horrible hacks, and for finding out about new, possible good hacks.

Oh yeah, way better. Your last tile set had the disadvantage that you couldn't place a tree right against a wall I assume. Many players would be frustrated that they couldn't walk along the top.

Aside from that the second one looks all around nicer, though I noticed you haven't done anything with that bottom wall. In-game the players will have half the screen filled with nothing but that, since the camera is focused on the player. You need to add some filler material to it

You could, but you could make any area not walkable if you wanted to.
I really don't know why I didn't make the trees against the hill, it's pretty bad level design because players couldn't go behind it, but they could every other tree.

Oh, I just used a tileset and then used MS Paint to tile them all together for this one.
I used to do a lot of overworlds in Lunar Magic though, for Super Mario World.

As a heads up, Paint can be really frustraiting to use if you don't get it right the first time. I suggesting using Paint.net. It's more or less Photoshop's mentally challenged little brother. Not quite as powerful, and it has its quirks, but it's a hell of a lot better then MS Paint

Your other option for something with layers is Gimp, but Gimp is intimidating as hell to new users

I don't like the grass tiles, but the map looks pretty great, aside from the lake on the right. Something about it seems weird, maybe connecting it to the lake in the middle, and putting a bridge over it would make it a bit better imo

I haven't got any more screencapped, unfortunately, but I'll have a look through what maps I have on my laptop and grab something nice for you.

I use RMXP and a tileset I assembled from a collection of things I've aquired over the years, so I don't have any specific credits I can point you to.

If you want a plot you may as well make it a different medium. Pokemon does not deliver it well at all. Gen IV and V have very edgy fanfic plots, but its pokemon so they're dulled to the point of irrelevance. The format does not lend itself to plot, it does lend itself to discovery, and the absolute best and only way to do that is to change how the game is played. Make people feel like it's their first time playing pokemon once more.

Eh I wasn't gonna change the structure too much except for the areas nearer to Sootopolis and a few other exceptions e.g. Pacifidlog Town -> Pacifidlog City.

Regarding the aesthetic things such as flowerbeds, you're right; especially for Mauville. Though, it was intentionally gridlike to reinforce the the urban, city-like town planning. I guess I could make a plaza of some sort in the centre instead of those two houses. I'll note it down for whenever I get back into devving.

Since you asked, Rusturf Tunnel is officially cleared but an earthquake at the start of the game blocks passage while revealing a second level.

The big issue with RomHacking is the enormous number of bizarre limitations. Some stuff is incredibly difficult for the hacker, and not even stuff you'd expect. For instance, significantly modding the intro screen to Ruby required its own specialized tool when I was trying that out. An entire tool, just for that. Shit was nuts.

Both of them suffer from the issue that doing anything really out of the box is very difficult, though. So, good luck.
