>>23278373flying has always been broken on paper.
It has always been dragon or normal tier neutral coverage, only three things resist it, and two of those things are not common at all. So it is a very good STAB to have when you got it. The problems in past gens have always been that it had no moves, and when flying mons did their other type was generally normal. Staraptor a very very obvious exclusion here, that was the first warning sign. A pokemon with Flying/Fighting coverage. Horrendously good, and that was just a regional bird.
let down by base 100 speed and laughable bulk though. Damn shame.Next warning was tornadus-therian. Tornadus-t was the first true FAST birdspam with coverage. It was ludicrously good. It got banned, in fact.
Along comes gen VI and the shit hits the fan. Tornadus-t doesn't have its reliability anymore, but we have new toys in talonflame and mega pinsir.
Flying spam, with coverage. Talonflame solves all the issues staraptor had, which was really just speed. Talonflame would still be very usable without its batshit insane ability.
Pinsir arguably the best mega at the end of the XY meta now works wonders with its newfound spammable flying type. Nothing wants to switch in on that. Nothing. No seriously, literally nothing, it has ground coverage, fighting coverage, and if it so desired coverage for skarmory.
And then the dragons of balance come along and flying is probably the best of the neutral STABs in the game. No immunity. Few resists. Resists have weaknesses in common.
It isn't too hot defensively though.
