There was no Serebii back then, you couldn't flood new pokemon game with too many newmons early in the game, no one knew what the duck they were. There was a lot of mystery in pokemon games back then, and the entire fan base was still elementary school children.

Pokemon games generally take me around 20-25 hours to beat, as in beat the e4. Despite Johto's size, it took me 26 hours to get to the e4. Kanto is the post-game.

The region can't stand on its own, and HGSS doesn't change that. Things like the bug hunt in the park is good and I probably wasted half my time playing on doing that, but damn even the regional professor gets hijacked by Oak. I can't believe people got pissed over moving to Hoenn, by the end of Crystal I'd had more than enough of Kanto/Johto.

Oh, in-game yeah, but in competitive it's outclassed by just about every fire type. And even then that's only because there's a shortage of fire types in Johto. Even if you do get a Growlithe, you're gonna have trouble getting a Fire Stone because they fucking removed the ability to buy them, what a fucking stupid decision.

I only find half of these legitimately interesting. Kanto had some unimpressive dungeons, but at least the ones that had plot relevance were cool. Whirl Islands was about as interesting as Rock Tunnel, a filler dungeon.

Unfortunately, Johto can't stand on its own because that's what it literally is; just an expansion of Kanto. Even the introduced 100 mons are just an expansion of the original dex, considering a good portion of it is cross-generation evolutions and baby forms. HGSS can't change what's essentially a design decision that was made on purpose.

Literally not Unova. There's nothing wrong with Typhlosion unless you're a faggot who can't appreciate simplicity considering the times. Serperior is arguably bad for being lazy and Samurott is one of the most polarizing evolutions ever. I personally don't hate any of the 3 starters, but Tepig line was definitely shit design even though my Emboar is just one of my many bros.

I can see the whole "forgettable Pokemon" thing because of the really awful first try at 'swarms'. I don't think it's until Crystal that you're even given a hint that some trainers who you can get a phone# for will call you to tell you about a swarm. Otherwise, without a guide you are basically left guessing and I think the Pokedex doesn't even show where their locations are. Doesn't help that the 6 are really bad except Remoraid (bad stats, interesting movepool) and maybe Marill for HM slave.

Also, is this a new meme or something? I don't remember the (justifiable) shitting on Johto being this common until around ORAS.

What's with the constant complaining about "shitty level scale"? What are you guys exactly having problems with? Whenever I play GSC or HGSS, I use a team of five and all of my Mons are level 39/40 when I reach Blackthorn City, which means that I'm pretty much on par with Clair. The only place where I do a little bit of grinding is around Cianwood/Olivine, where it's easy to level up your Mons against all those Tentacruel that are fairly common and give lots of Exp Points. I have never had problems with the level scaling in those games, never. Not as a kid and not to today. This makes it quite difficult for me to understand what the real problem is so I've just been wondering what it is that you guys are doing wrong.

Arguably the bug-catching contest is a safari replacement, other than that, yeah, Johto was the first region to feel at least a bit eventful and alive, and the games introduced game-changing mechanics like breeding and the special stat split

Kanto's Route 1 is only accessable after you complete the Elite Four. Because including Kanto was an afterthought to take up more room in the data it was almost just ported with a few changes made. The Pokemon found on that route were basically unchanged.

They're probably speaking of the original, where nothing was allowed to have higher levels than the E4. In HG/SS, they had since learned their lesson, and the levels were bumped up. Not that it meant much, though.

You can't put LV30-40 wilds on Route 1. It sucks for someone coming in ridiculously overleveled from Johto, but it keeps continuity for Kanto trainers. Although I will fully give you the wild levels going to absolute shit by Cerulean for NO reason and stay that way.

Also, the scaling is actually worse in Kanto than Johto. After the Kanto split path, the Gym jumps from 29 to 43 - Johto only jumps from 25 to 31. Everything else scales pretty accordingly
