>>23299764>The key to having a fantastic Mega design is to take a Pokemon's main defining feature and enhancing the original design based off of itNo, it isn't. That's only if they choose to enhance it. They could work off another concept altogether, and as long as the concept emerges from the original and is conveyed in the design, then it's a good design.
And the main purpose of megas is to look like a powered up form of the original, and they all achieve that.
It's not just enhancing a feature, it's reflecting the changes. Mawile gets two maws because its power literally doubles with huge power. Gengar gets the eye from Mean Look on its head, and phases through the ground to lock into your shadow, and becomes prone to ground moves. Metagross regains its magnetism/levitation by combining with its prior forms, reflecting its speed increase.
Megas only need to look powered up, and convey how exactly they're powered up. Capitalizing on the defining features is a plus, but not all pokemon have strongly defining features, like Abomasnow, so you just need the first two.
Also, Sharpedo does look more like a torpedo. They opted for organic flare with the sawteeth and scars, because it already looked a bit too mechanical with the flat backside, and it's supposed to be both. Aerodactyl doesn't have much to hightlight, so they just made it more menacing and its type more clear, with a slight nod to Rathalos thrown in.
