See that was my first thought, too.

But carbunkles are red. Carbink is grey and looks like a hunk of coal with diamonds stuck in it. It's obviously supposed to be carbon.

Also its Japanese name is Melecie. That's obviously pretty close to Diancie.

Pokemon names tend to refer to roughly the same thing in each language, so the "carb" in "Carbink" has to have something to do with diamonds as well. In other words, it's from carbon.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. They usually attempt to translate the "spirit" of the name, rather than just its literal meaning.

Well, whatever, it's just one of those things. It's kinda like how early in development, porygon was supposed to be an eeveelution, and they kept the "on" suffix in its name even after making it its own thing.

NA translators have absolutely nothing to do with the original JP developers and probably had zero clue what their intentions were with a ton of things, looking at names like Mr. Mime when genders were introduced the very next gen and half the guides have terrible misinformation.

Originally they didn't, but after all the fuckups in gen 1 and 2, Gamefreak started supplying translators with specific notes about what each localized Pokemon name had to convey so there wouldn't be any more Mr. Mimes or Wobbuffets.

I hate Diancie.

To me, it's a very lazy design in terms of typing. It's rock/fairy, and normally I'd be thrilled about a Pokemon receiving a never before used type combination. But the Diancie line is just a rock who's arbitrarily humanoid. Other rock types derive their secondary typing from the species they're based off of. Gigalith is rock type because it's a rock. Carracosta is a water type because it's a turtle. Diancie, rather than being something tangentially related to fairy like a dog or a snake, is just a forcedly humanoid rock. The connection is forced, inorganic and the result of just making a rock anthropomorphic with no justification.
