So why do people always cry "o-overdesigned" for some later-gen Pokemon? Is being "overdesigned" bad? Do later-gen Pokemon still look like Pokemon?

Simple designs are nicer. And random spikes make it harder when you want to give your Pokemon appreciation.

I don't believe garchomp was ever overdesigned. That said, things like Reshiram and Zekrom (no matter how pretty or cool you think they look) don't fit in because they don't match the aesthetic of everything else. They are too busy compared to the rest of the franchise.

How so? The rest of the franchise has Pokemon that are like that as well. Do you mean the turbine and jet tails?

Reshiram is literally a furry dragon with a torch for a tail. I actually think it has less colors and shit on it than Raikou, Suicune, and Entei.

Not always. Gen II mons are so fucking simple but aged horribly. Besides, many new pokemon are also "simple". Each generation have their own good complex designs, bad complex designs, good simple designs and bad simple designs.

That being said, I like Garchomp but hate its mega.

I actually really enjoy how futuristic a lot of the newer Pokemon look (Zygarde, Zekrom, Reshiram, Greninja). It shows that the series is evolving (hue) and expanding ideas.

Still hate stuff like Slurpuff and Spewpa.

Because people don't understand that early-gen pokemon were simple because they had to be.

People eill say this about literally any videogame series spanning multiple generations:

A new console is a chance for developers to try new things. Retro game characters HAD to be kept simple and colorful, because they were designed to look good at extremely low resolutions and only a limited palette.

No just the level of detail in their design. There is so much going on. They really stand out. Especially Zekrom. It's like throwing a Yu-gi-oh monster in or a monster from final fantasy, or monster hunter. They all have their own artstyles. It's odd to see for instance a nidoran in FF12.

Not to say I have anything against its design, but really the only pokemon where I thought "this could pass as something not from pokemon" was normal Kyurem. Mostly because of the overall jagged asymmetrical look and the solid yellow eyes, which kind of reminded me of Yu-gi-oh monsters. It's just kind of interesting because symmetry isn't really something you consider when thinking about pokemon designs, or at least not something that seems to be brought up often

No, I don't think overdesigned is bad, because I don't feel like they are over the top, sure, maybe it doesn't need those chest spikes, but it doesn't hurt it in any way. I always felt that simple designs run the risk of appearing lazy.
