Emulator. Lets me play the games without needing to invest $200+ every 3 years just to be able to play the next game, lets me play the game at any screen size I want, speed up slower gameplay (looking at you, Gen IV), and use any kind of controller I want. Plus, hacks are more interesting most of the time.
I still do buy the games and systems when they come out, though.

I can play romhacks on my DS.

I didn't have a DS for years so I played most things via roms. Once I got my 3DS I only played the actual games. To be honest, some of them weren't the worth time or money, but thankfully I managed to sell those.

Emulation for anything but the current games because I can fast forward. I don't know about anyone else but shit like it taking forever to enter battle (screen flashes, watching wild pokemon appear, watching trainer throw the ball) loses the novelty after the 500th time I've seen it, and for some reason they still haven't made that stuff be disabled if you turn off battle animations.

Gen 6 has been pretty good with speeding the game up if nothing else though, saving is almost instant etc, but simplistic games like Pokemon need to take notes from Bravely Default and add in a fast forward button to the game by default.

Up until Gen 3 I emulate. Mostly because there are minor hacks now that enable playing the game without linking. It's a little tedious trading with yourself to obtain everything. I'd use flashcart, but RSE isn't really compatible with the ones still around as RTC emulation is kill.

Otherwise I go with the main cart, even if WiFi is busted on everything but this gen.

I bet you're one of those people who keeps animations on in Pokemon and Super Robot Wars even after you've seen them a couple dozen times and think it makes the game better somehow.

There's a difference between playing a slow paced game and having a game be slower because the same overly elaborate stock animations play every time you do something as simple as pick up an item or enter battle.

But 3DS emulators emulators can upscale and add more AA, so I prefer Emulation for 3DS.

That's not "great" progress at all.
It still can't even play the music without crashing hard. It most likely has a few more years to go before we have anything usable for games that people actually want to emulate like Pokemon or Monster Hunter.

Gen 1-2, emulators, because the actual games run way too goddamn slow since there's no running shoes option.

For Gen 3 I use emulators only for things like randomizers and such, since those are things that I can't really do on my cartridges, but I can still play them normally on cart.
