Sceptile was Hoenn's #1 starter back in the day, but that was before they(Sugimori) started heavily pushing Blaziken with shit like giving it Speed Boost, a mega before its fellow starters, and making it into an XY promo.

Ash had a Sceptile, it had a personality quirk, and it was the only full evolved starter he had other than Charizard. I'd honestly be surprised if that wasn't enough to make it the most popular at the time.

I'm entirely indifferent to Oshawott, but I love Dewott's design, so I feel like Samurott was just a slap in the face, especially considering that it turns in to a fucking sea lion out of nowhere. They should have kept with the sleek aesthetic they had going for with Dewott. Make it off a ronin or something instead of a samurai, fuck, I don't know, but SOMETHING not what the travesty Samurott turned in to.

Samurott is not a really bad design, it just didn't fit Osha's line.

It would be great if they had altered it's color scheme to lighter blue, made it Ice/Fighting with Sacred Sword, Vaccum Wave, Ice Shard and Ice Beam. And released it as a solo mon.

It's mostly because Grass starters tend to be biased to being defensive mons besides Sceptile and Serperior, and defensive mons generally suck for in-game where the only thing that matters is coverage moves. At the least this is the case for Meganium.

Chesnaught is pretty meh for me, I went with Greninja this gen

I used to like Meganium a lot, but it fell off my favorite rosters recently, but Venusaur, Torterra are still among my top favorite pokemon of all time, with Sceptile in the list but not that high

Something of possible relevance to add; I wonder if the cover mon had a role in influencing popularity? In Japan it was red / green initially, so charizard and venusaur might be more popular there for that reason while overseas venusaur wasn't on a cover until leafgreen.

Also, Smuglord and Venusaur are not unpopular. Serperior was the most popular starter of the generation, and Venusaur and Blastoise are always awesome. They just get outshined by Charizard's popularity.

See how the Bulbasaur line was added long before the other two starters, who were added at the very end of development, early Sugimori pics such as the one with the main character, rival and scrapped girl facing eachother (which also inspired the Pokemon Special main characters).

You are clearly retarded and genuinely do not understand concept execution.

The art of swordsmanship was born out of the tool-wielding feats that our arms and hands could accomplish once our upright position gave them the freedom to be able to do so. Have you ever tried sword fighting on all fours? Of course not. You know why? Because it's stupid to do so. You miss out on 90% of your total mobility.

You know why they consciously avoided animating the thing? Because its design doesn't lend itself to the style of battling it's supposed to be inspired by. Even when "standing upright" its center of gravity is a hindrance considering its primarily quadrupedal stance makes it hunch back, losing whatever equilibrium it should be having.

I remember they stated in an interview that they were having a creative block designing Samurott, and it really shows. They definitely didn't think it through. This is fundamentally flawed design.

As a Water-fag, Torterra is the only Grass starter that I really like, and by really like as in I actually like it over all the other Water starters, though in my old playthroughs of DPP I always chose Piplup. Don't really like the other Grass and Fire starters.

Seriously, been playing since gen 1 and it was the first time I didn't pick water starter on my first run.

You know, I wanna say that due to the general design of the games that Fire types most often become the primary choice due to a couple of outside factors.

In most regions, especially early ones, Fire types are relatively uncommon, whereas Grass aren't too hard to find mostly because since the primary source of encountering Pokemon in any given game is tall grass and they can almost throw a Grass type in any tall grass they want.

In a similar vein, Water types are seldom available until either a rod is obtained (usually at least the second rod for variety) or through surfing.

Basically, in order of most common to least it's like: Grass >> Water >>>>>> Fire.

I feel like it's sort of incidental that Fire is always the popular choice.

Grass starters are usually unpopular because they often don't rely on brute force like the average fire starter.
Overall I like both venusaur and charizard, and sceptile is my favourite starter from gen 3,
but that's a hard choice.

Ivysaur was my favourite starter in Red, I was so disappointed when he evolved into that giant toad rather than some sort of bipedal dinosaur. I'm probably a bit too harsh on Venusaur because of that.

I remember when i used to live in Sacramento, nearly all my friends played Pokemon. When R/S came out, everyone chose either Treecko or Mudkip. Three years later, in the advent of D/P i moved to Olympia, and the same thing happened there: every single person i knew that still played pokemon had also gone Sceptile or Swampert. I literally hadn't seen anyone in real life or the internet care about KFC much. It's hilarious because two friends that got into competitive during late B/W that had previously had Sceptile as their starter suddenly starter caring more about Blaziken. Which is curious, because Speed Boost was revealed around that time.

Two years ago, i moved to Beanerland and even there nobody liked Blaziken, though i'm guessing that it's because they don't even play Pokemon here and their opinion stems from the anime or some shit like that.

Though i chose Sceptile, i DO like KFC. But i've never seen as much love for it as what the internet seems to imply. At least from personal experience.

Although come to think of it I've only actually chosen the Grass starter in Blue. I've more or less alternated Water and Fire in other gens. Which is strange now that I think about it because in general I like the Grass-type starters better than the Fire-type ones.

in general, grass is a pretty meh type, the fire and water starters are generally more hyped for some reason. Also grass is super fucking common even in the beginning of the games usually, while it may take a while to get a decent water type, and many of the games make you wait a long ass time to get a fire type.
I personally really dig the grass starters though

False. Infernape was the best In-Game starter we've ever had until the inception of megas. It managed to be straight up OU since its introduction and without the need for HAs. Swampert was a close second.
