The anime is so formulaic and predictable, it has its own tropes.

>Ash and Pikachu go to new reason
>Ash gets into some situation that puts him with new friends
>Ash encounters a regional starter that wants to travel with him
>Ash catches bird Pokemon of that region that will be used to search for Team Rocket in filler episodes
>There are a bunch of filler episodes with one-off characters and Pokemon that Team Rocket want to steal
>Gym battles that Team Rocket inevitably ruin
>Battles continue after Rocket interference
>Short story arch where Ash encounters that region's villainous team
>Ash releases one of his Pokemon, usually his strongest, for a stupid fucking reason
>There's an episode that's all like "FUCK EVOLUTION EVOLVING POKEMON IS BAD"
>Depending on the season, Ash has to battle a Gym Leader that is also his traveling companion
