Game Freak's target audience is Japanese kids.

Japanese kids these days are into mobile like Western kids and get bored easily.

The Battle Frontier would be difficult and boring to them.

Therefore, Game Freak added the Battle Resort to replicate the Battle Tower island of the original Ruby and Sapphire and make some references to the Battle Frontier from Emerald.

because
1. they already had a games worth of development put into them
2. BF is something they focus on when they start development with a finished game (RS->Emerald, DP->Platinum), because the main development doesn't take nearly as much
3. they already have that planned for XY-sequels, where they don't have to create the whole game again

You need to press run and jump sometimes to jump long distances
People knew how to run and how to jump independently
90% of people had to be told that they can press both buttons for a longer jump like in Mario.

I wish people would remember this. RS and DP both had shitty postgame battles, but Emerald and Platinum had great ones. BW had a pretty expansive postgame, but B2W2 had even more. I fully expect the next Kalos game to expand on the Maison and unexplored areas.
