Why doesn't knock off work with mega stones?

I can understand the pokemon not losing the stone if it has already mega evolved, but why can't you make them drop the stone before they mega evolve?

To simplify the amount of work they need to do, Gamefreak prevents any item that changes a mons form from being knocked off as long as its being held by the correct mon.

For example, you can knock off a Mawilite held by a Ditto but you can't knock off Mawilite held by Mawile.

I think it would be a big hit to a team if it happened, say you switched in Pidgot and it took a Knock Off. Now it;s a joke of a pokemon. They wanted to protect Megas cause they kinda put the team on their back and carry games. You don't want a counter to that so easily.

Balance.

Being able to Knock Off Mega Stones would make Knock Off extremely broken.

For many teams, their Megas are the only safe switch-ins against Knock Off spam.

in the anime they are usually pictured wearing the megastones in very safe ways, as in a metal band in their arms or chest that cannot simply be removed.
Other held items you assume your pokemon is just holding them and you can knock it off their hands/paws/whatever

Because then you'd risk permanently losing the item in the wild.

Consider a wild pokemon or some in game trainer slapping away an item you only get one of in the entire game.

it's stupid that a utility move also does that much damage, you should have to choose between potentially crippling your opponent or getting a good hit on a switchin not get both in one move

then again knock off is far from the game's biggest problem

Form-changing items (Plates with Multitype, Griseous Orb on Giratina, Drives on Genesect) have worked that way since the 4th generation.
And even if the Pokemon hasn't Mega Evolved yet, the game already treats it differently from its base by bringing up the Mega Evolve button in battle.
