Yes, that's realism. Because bats actually exist and ghosts don't. A reinterpretation certainly more interesting than [pokemon but drawn with more detail]

Gengar more-or-less resembles an amphibian (A toad, more likely). If not, he resembles a Cheshire Cat's true form. Also, gaseous entity with a solidified stature.

Haunter is a representation of if your nightmares and innermost fears manifest into one entity. Also, gas with liquid elements.

Gastly is a literal sun without heat. Also gas-ball.

it's a fucking blob with ears and limbs. It doesn't specifically resemble anything realistic. He made them bats because a bat design was the best way to get the Pokemon's design through each stage while still looking like an actual animal.
