We should base its effectiveness on simple, intuitive things, not delve into ridiculous physics. Remember, a kid needs to be able to understand this, and we do need to consider its competitive usefulness.
Here's my personal opinion which I've been meaning to type up:
Offensively, Sound type Moves would be:
Super effective: Ground, Rock, Steel, Ice, Water
Standard damage: Normal, Fighting, Flying, Poison, Grass, Electric, Dark, Fairy
Not very effective: Bug, Ghost, Fire, Psychic, Dragon
No damage: Sound
Defensively, Sound type Pokemon would be:
Resistant: Ground, Ice
Standard damage: Normal, Fighting, Flying, Rock, Bug, Ghost, Steel, Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, Psychic, Dragon
Weak: Poison, Dark, Fairy
Immune: Sound
Rationale for offense for physics nerds:
Sound vibrations will disturb the Ground (earthquakes) and should be super effective against Rock, Steel, and Ice, since it could break those very rigid structures via vibration. It should be super-effective against Water Pokemon because sea creatures are profoundly effected by sound waves, disturbing their echolocation.
Conversely, Sound moves would not be very effective against:
Bugs: they're tiny. And need more type advantages.
Ghosts: they're all about scaring people with sound and visuals, and so would learn sound moves, but not be affected by them much. Especially the gaseous ones.
Fire: Fire has too many goddamned weaknesses already. I see people saying sound waves can extinguish fire, but that's certainly not the first thing that comes to anyone's mind. We're talking Fire *Pokemon* here, not fire moves, which are separate.
Psychic: Those of strong mind can dismiss loud sounds through inner focus
Dragon: Dragons ain't afraid of your sound
And of course, they wouldn't affect Sound Pkmn.
I ran out of space to type the rest; if anyone cares about my opinion, I can go on. I'd love criticism.
