Most of (1), you never see, it's off the map, it looks that big when I combine the two pictures together.
I'll give you (2) though, The idea was to try and deviate from the norm a little while simultaneously keeping things simplistic, it's kind of a mix. I wanted the town to have a lake because I like the look of it, it does create the problem of people thinking they need Surf early on, but it was set up like this to trick people, you can use Surf but there's an easier way that's accessible at the beginning of the game, which is going around Route 1, I agree that it does look a little clusterfuck-y though, I need to fix that.
The cutting trees however, while I agree have them is a little too complicated right at the beginning, I wanted to go with the idea that you can access new areas in every direction from the start town, which means I needed to get creative, the start town appears in the dead centre of the world map.
I technically don't consider that PokeBall to be a Start Town item, but a Route 1 item, because you need to cross through there to get it and you can't see the other Poke Ball at the start of the game either.
With (3), I was actually thinking of removing that water at the bottom left all together, or maybe moving it to the bottom, in clearer view, I'm not sure yet.
and finally (4), I think I just used this as a replacement for going South if I needed it, I'll probably remove it when I change the direction the ocean is facing.
I'll explain the idea for this town too, It's supposed to be a farm town, that ships it's produce throughout the region, which is why I so conveniently made it in the centre of the map. Those large areas with dirt floors is where the farmers are meant to be working, it does create the problem of the start town being too spacious, but trust me when I say it looks a lot smaller in-game.
Thanks for the feedback, I'll be changing up and having a look at some of things you suggested.
