Mono means that any sound in the game comes out equally in both ears, whereas in Stereo sounds are either lowered or raised in volume to create more immersion. For example, your opponent's Pokemon's attacks, as well as their cry, would play more in the right ear (because it was on the right side of the screen) whereas yours would play more from the left speaker.
