Maybe it was hype fault, but a lot of people got really excited over what Valerie as a person has to offer. Valerie is probably along with Diantha, one of the game characters that was made and could be 100x better depending on how the anime fleshes her out. And seeing as how the team really seems to be pushing Ash growing up, this is chance that cannot be missed.

If it weren't for Ash, Clemont would have probably given up on retaking the gym himself before telling Limone. Even then, once the gym is retaken, he would have no other ambition beyond being gym leader of Lumiose and being a shut-in inventor. Bonnie would have probably stagnated in a similar way.
