I am no genwunner, I enjoyed all generations, but the design quality has definitely dropped since gen 3.
Look at this.
They aren't trying to make creatures anymore, it's like they are making plastic toys, simplified designs with few polygons. Like they have no idea what made Pokémon likeable creatures in the first place.
In the beggining, you could imagine them existing, being alive, you traveling and finding them, they were believable.
Today the designs are unnatural. And usually they add useless extras to make up for that The result is the overdesign /vp/ hates so much. The gen 1 designs are clean, natural, and they work. Compare Ponyta and Keldeo. Nobody likes Keldeo, and it was even forced some time.
But these gen 1 designs were not made by Gamefreak, they were made by the OG animators. GameFreak does NOT have the ability to design believable monsters. So good modern designs like Tyrantrum or Golurk are very rare nowadays.
Ken Sugimori should retire. They need to hire the OG animators again and let them draw all the new pokémon. So many cool concepts that look like shit.
