I feel like HM moves force you to think about which pokemon you need to teach the moves to or force you to go out and discover new pokemon to catch that can learn the moves.
It adds challenge and makes you try new and different pokemon.

I agree. Black and White actually kind of fit the theme of truth versus ideals. I doubt many children understood the deeper meanings behind the story though.

I like HMs as well, but for somewhat different reasons.
I like the exploring and adventuring aspect of the games. HMs really help with the immersion here. It makes it feel more like a journey.
With games that lack focus on HMs like BW it just didn't feel the same.

Pretty sure that these opinions are unpopular:
