And the reason why these things wouldn't work in Gen I isn't a matter of complexity as much as it is a function of subtlety. First generation Pokemon are extremely blunt. Few (if any) of them have more than one way of "reading" their designs. While that simplicity can be nice, I personally find that the ambiguity of newer designs makes for far more interesting Pokemon that anything we saw in the original 151.
It's fairly ironic that you posted a picture of Volcarona done with Sugimori's old coloring style, because it's a good example of what I'm talking about; while Volcarona is overtly a moth or butterfly, it's also a subtle analogy for the sun. Those sorts of hidden dualities just don't exist in Gen I. What you see is what you get.
