Children of early 2000s who received that marketing campaign have money to spend in the franchise. Now Children of middle-2010s are really different, and it's a real challenge to join one and half of a generation under the same concept.
GameFreak should exploit the 20s and 30s demographics. That's why they included Kanto's starters in X/Y. And I must say, it was effective.
