Do you think that tipping and the "Horde of Faceless Men" were supposed to be part of a deeper plot of X and Y before it was presumably rushed?

having traveled to france masuda no doubt found the idea of tipping to be strange and unique. asian cultures don't really have it. it's inclusion was intended to make the kalos region feel different than previous, mostly asian inspired, regions.

My French teacher told me that they find tipping kind of insulting in France, actually. At least as far as food goes, so I'm not really sure if that's fact or Nintendo just dun fucked up.

Waiters may push their non-French speaking patrons a little and this attitude is somewhat reflected in the NPC waiters in XY, but they don't really need a tip because the service charge is added in the bill.

Tipping is tradition in France, and is seen as an act of appreciation from the patron and no more than that. So no, tipping doesn't warrant being part of the plot.
