As to Brown, despite its age it's still one of the best. The level curve is nice, good distribution of Pokémon, phys/spec, color similar to Yellow's added color, added Pokémon beyond the original 151 (might not sound like much but remember the hack is really old despite getting updates every five years or so), planned direct compatibility with Prism when it's finished, and my favorite part is a lot of the towns are based on the beta towns from Gold and Silver.
The only issues are the game sometimes not telling you what you need to do (at one point you need to go through a warehouse to get the Silph Scope but the card to unlock something in the warehouse is in the not-Lavender Tower so you have to go in there without said Silph Scope to get it), and a little bit of the dialogue is cringy, though most is passable.
