We're an ocean away from each other and have been a distinct country for centuries... some differences in the language are to be expected. Neither version is right or wrong, and it's absurd to get all butthurt because "OMG MORE LEIK HANDEGG." And it goes both ways. Americans who get all indignant when someone refers to football meaning what we call "soccer" are equally wrong.
