But there isn't some grand Da Vinci code just because of a few naming quirks. Giovanni is blacked out because they wanted it to be a surprise. Go watch Origins, Red is shocked when he finds out, same with Special. It's a plot choice and not hidden away in some cryptic message, it was just meant to be a surprise that you find out when the game tells you, or maybe earlier if you notice a resemblance between Giovanni's sprite and the hidden Gym Leader's mugshot. If the sign tells you who the Gym Leader is then that's just a bad design choice on part of the devs.
The only DEEPEST LORE in Red and Blue is the Mew/Mewtwo stuff, and all that is very clearly explained in books, except the Mr. Fuji/Dr. Fuji thing, which is made more clear in the remake anyway.
