I haven't been seriously into Pokemon since Gen 1 and the last game in the series I played was Diamond. I can't even name most of the Pokemon past 151.

What have I missed out on?

You haven't missed much, since you can jump in at any given gen and learn the new changes
Basically some exp thing changes, the addition of the fairy type and some other stuff
It gets explained along the way so you learn to use things as you progress in the story
Also, triple and inverse battles are a thing.

Basically the type chart is inverted, for example, fire is weak to water normally, in inverse battles it goes vice versa
It's kind of a wasted potential imo, since in X/Y there is a whopping 1 trainer who does those kinds of battles
Also forgot sky battles where only pokemon with levitate or flying pokemon are allowed to battle
