1. Have a wide enough variety of options that it can counter a wide variety of opponents
2. Be able to support the rest of your team in ways like baton passing or setting up hazards
3. Be able to block opponent's attempts to set up
4. Have good enough defensive synergy with the rest of your team that, even if it ends up on a bad matchup, you have something you can always switch into on turn 1.
As it is, you seem to have just chosen a Pokémon that you like, and never shift from that being your lead, when, as soon as you're against a player who has any idea how to play, Tentacruel will most likely be dead weight a lot of the time.
