If someone had never been exposed to Pokemon before, as in never heard of it, and got into it today, what would be the typical process they would go through up until they were fully up-to-speed with the current fanbase?

I'm asking for my own curiousity, everyone I know just jumped in during gen 1 and that's the only way to get into Pokemon that I know of.
