I have never played a Pokemon game in my life. Is it worth playing the original GB/GBC games or do I just skip to the remakes and later generations?

It's best to skip to the newer games. There's no continuous storyline or anything, and most of the games are borderline identical in terms of plot.
I'd recommend grabbing omega ruby or alpha sapphire and starting from there. If you want to pick up any of the earlier games after that, keep in mind that there've been some pretty major mechanics changes.

As a huge nostalgiafag I can confidently say there's no reason to play Red/Blue/Yellow. If you want to start in chronological order play the remakes Fire Red/ Leaf Green.

Keep in mind the remakes are still heavily based off of the GB games so they're pretty bare bones. There's some additional islands thrown in but it's nothing to write home about. If you want to play something a little denser start with Heart Gold/Soul Silver onward.

Fire Red -> Emerald -> Soul Silver -> Platinum -> Black -> Black 2 -> Y -> Alpha Sapphire.

Do this, choose whatever version you want (Except Emerald and Platinum, they're sister games of Ruby/Sapphire and Diamond/Pearl respectively)

Yes. Same with Platinum vs Diamond/Pearl. Diamond/Pearl are considered some of the worst games while Platinum is considered one of the best. Emerald is also considered one of the best, while RSORAS is considered okay.

It's slightly different yeah, since it came out as a variant of Ruby* and Sapphire** that managed to mash the two game plots together***.

*Team Magma is bad and you get to catch a Groudon.
**Team Aqua is bad and you get to catch a Kyogre.
** Team and Magma and Aqua are both bad and you get to catch a Ground and a Kyogre.

But then even if it wasn't though Emerald is still a more enjoyable game since its difficulty curve is set slightly higher than null.

Crystal is still fine, I reckon, it's a neat and cozy relic. It's a much more streamlined simpler experience with no abilites or natures, and only 12 or viable OU pokes, but that's fine coz it didn't it doesn't need to be any more complex - it's like the pokemon form of junk food. The only issue is that it doesn't have an endgame. You'll spend 3-4 hours beating the main story, then a couple more filling out the 200 or so pokes you can get without trading, and then after there's nothing to do but hunt for pop out out ditto babies and grind E4 for stat exp. That was fine in 2000 when you'd want to do that to beat all of your friends at school, but now though what's the point?

You can go with emulators for gen I, II and III. If you want to play gens IV and V, you have to use emulators for PC, since mobile emulators are shit. XY are optional, trust me, the story felt like shit. Go for ORAS. It all really depends on how much time you want to spare.

The reason you shouldn't play the old games is not because they've aged, but rather because those games are buggy as fuck. As an adult, a lot of those bugs will be immediately apparent, while other times you'll just realize something is broken. The games are fun, but they had a lot of that lens of childhood keeping them afloat.

I would recommend starting with the first non-buggy game, Ruby or Sapphire, or Fire Red or Leaf Green. All the games have bugs, but nowhere near the extent to which the originals had them.

Yes. Graphics, all the legendaries available, updated dex with mons 387-721, megas, etc. Personally I don't give a shit about the Frontier or any post-game facility, so replacing it with the Maison isn't a big deal. And that's really the only issue I ever see on /vp/ wit the games (outside of difficulty, but it's a fucking kids game so that's irrelevant).

It improved on RSE, which is what a remake is supposed to do.
