Does anyone else enjoy researching the beta elements of the Pokemon games that went unused? This is an unused color pallet for the gold title screen that can be accessed through the coin case glitch.

I remember actually managing to get this title screen, and freaking out and quickly turning off my game because my immediate reaction was that I thought I broke it. I turned the game back on and it was fine, but then I wondered if I had just imagined it. The Ho-oh sprite was originally made to look the way you see it there. At some point in development, they decided that it looked better shadowed out and set all of its colors to blue instead of modifying the sprite to a silhouette.

The fact that the sprite retrains divisions between its colors does qualify as a development leftover.

To try to rephrase what happened to something more understandable, Ho-Oh's sprite has four colors, like a full palette, so it can be assumed it was planned to be in color. Contrast Lugia's and Suicune's title screen sprites where they only have two colors.

There are a couple of blindingly obvious reasons for that.
One, there was no female protagonist in Gen I or at the start of Gen II. Two, having the male protagonist as the travelling companion would cause too much of a conflict with Ash.

Located in the code of Gold, Silver, and Crystal are six unused hold items that would have prevented the Pokémon holding it from being inflicted with a status effect.

These items work perfectly except burned and frozen. While they still create the correct effect, the other four bring up the text "(Pokémon)'s protected by (item)!" These items aren't consumed after use, so they can be used indefinitely, much like the Leftovers. Burn and Freeze simply do the effect without telling the player anything.

It is unknown why these were left out, as it is likely these items would be the precursor to abilities introduced in Generation III that would prevent certain status effects, such as Immunity and Insomnia.

>Holder cannot be frozen
>Holder cannot fall asleep (Rest still makes holder fall asleep)
>Holder cannot be paralyzed
>Holder cannot be confused

It could easily be both - eye candy for boys, and design conflict with Ash. At first glance the male protags have all had a similar build and look to Ash, and they've tended to choose travelling companions who are considerably more distinct in appearance to Ash.

I mean 5th gen used neither Hilbert nor Hilda and both had similar elements to Ash - hat style, color scheme, and especially in Hilbert's case, silhouette.
