Sort of inspired by a previous thread, but this is more directed towards the younger pokeman fans(those who would be around 18-20 now). Do you feel like you still grew up in a good time to be a Pokemon fan? Because it honestly feels like to me that we completely missed out on the golden age of Pokemon. But, then I hear some stories about how people born in 1996 were still playing Pokemon with friends and trading cards. What do you guys think?

Some of my best memories are of playing with the cards, toys, and even bedsheets, and making fake cards with classmates.

The feeling of just how cool Pokemon is. How creative it is and all you can do with the cards, merchandize, and games. Going over friend's houses and trading Pokemon cards and pokemon in the games. All those things you would be unable to experience.

Had red and blue as a real small kid, couldn't get past rock tunnel cuz i didn't know to use flash or where to get it

Loved the stadium games though and was obsessed with the anime and collecting the trading cards

Besides, the younger generation may not have been old enough to properly experience the start of pokemon, they were around for really the revitalization of the pokemon series with the third generation

Half the reason HOENN CONFIRMED was such a meme was because all the kids that started with that game wanted to re experience the game that started their love for pokemon

Shit was pretty fun. Until Gen3 we played the games together. So, yes, I think I got the golden age. My friend also had thousands of TCG cards. While I got only 2 raw decks(Misty's and another one) he gave me some spare cards of his.
We also collected the stickers from the official album and traded them with the whole school. Stickers had an accessible price so, everyone was collecting them. GBC, in the other hand, was expensive in here, so it was not so common for kids to have them.

Yes. He's my best bro to this day.
The funny thing is that my family started getting richer and his family poorer. His parents are lawyers and divorced. Most of his income started coming from his mom. And it appears she couldn't get profitable cases anymore.
So, when I was fifteen the financial gap between us already was really noticeable.
So, whenever he said he didn't have money to go out somewhere like the mall, movies or restaurant, I always paid for him.
Our friendship is one that we don't count how much money we owe to each other. We just do it knowing we will get covered when one has it and the other doesn't.
Now, he started working while I'm still stuck at uni so, the roles reversed again.
When we hang out, he usually pays some of my shit.

Besides the joy from the golden age, we oldfags got the joy of seeing the monochromatic game evolve to full a 3D in XY. The nostalgia and amazement made alot of my friends who missed gen4 and 5 to buy the 3DS just as a Pokémon Machine. XY did an amazing job for us by putting old gen pokés in the first grass paths.
And it amazes us the fact that XY is the first poké game for 8 years old kids, today.

I do kinda feel like I missed out on some of the good shit. I couldn't even finish Gold because I got lost on the way to Mr. Pokemon's house. At least when I played Red later I made it to the Pokemon daycare, but then I left SHELLSHOCK there for literally the rest of the game.

The first real Pokemon experience I had (as in, actually playing the game and understanding what was happening) was Ruby on an emulator when I was like 8. So yeah, I'd say I kind of missed out on playing with other kids.

I'm not that guy, but I'm a year younger and still have fond memories of playing pokemon Red on my brother's GBP. Sure I had no idea what the fuck I was doing, and I may have caught like ten of the same mon in the Safari Zone, but those very few times I got to play inspired me to buy Silver on it's release. And I've been playing ever since. While I didn't experience the actual "craze" I still grew up around many who did and I believe that influenced me one way or another

I remember when my dad brought home gold and silver and having to read the guidebooks to get through some parts of the game. I had toys, posters, plushies, a giant binder filled with cards. I even had the anime VHS tapes.

I was reading an old NeoGaf thread about the Pokemon craze and it's quite interesting to see. Most of the posters seem to be around the 26-29 range. So they would have been in late elementary school or middle school when Pokemon first came to the West. To that demographic, Pokemon was just a fad and once they entered high school, the universal trend was that they ended up dropping interest. I'm 18 and all throughout my life, Pokemon has just been known as that established Nintendo franchise, which I honestly believe has helped keep my interest in it all these years. Say what you will about this "Pokemon craze", but I am glad I grew up in a time when the card game was still popular and your friends just wanted to play the damn games instead of con you for your cards.

Pokemon was all over TV, movie theatres, magazines, toy stores, stores. Everyone was talking about Pokemon - parents, teachers, it was on the news etc. It's easy to be cynical but it was a one of a kind experience - no fad in my childhood came close to the size and scale of it.

There was also the benefit of no "popular" internet. It was all little fansites, rumours, magazines. There was generally a lot more rumour and mystery surrounding main games. It was also the time of A+ spin-offs like Snap, Puzzle League and Pinball.

I'm in my mid-twenties and I have no issue with more recent gens. I get nostalgic for Gen IV at times. But I think you're kidding yourself if you're eighteen years old and assume the Pokemon you grew up with was the same as it was in the late nineties. It's no crime, but it's not really worth trying to pretend otherwise.

Pokemon hit the states in 1996. And the craze didn't die down until 2002, when the Celebi movie was released, which I believe was the point when Pokemon's popularity started to go south. Nevertheless, that meant you had about six years to experience the craze.

If you were in elementary/primary school any time between '96 and '02, then you experienced the hype of Pokemon to its fullest.

If you were in middle school anytime between '96 and '02, then you had less peers to experience it with, but you experienced it nonetheless.

The perfect window is 1989 to the tail end of 1994. If you were born any earlier then you're just a manchild hanging on the coattails of a younger generation. Born any later and you're just a greenhorn hanging on the coattails of an older generation.

My friends didn't get into it until Gen 4 so I never had that experience with the Gen 1/2 games. That said, I still loved the games and still do although ORAS wasn't as good as I'd hoped

There is no golden age. It's what you make of it. Am I a little dissapointed I wasn't able to experience Pokémon when it first came out? Sure.

But I had so much fun with it as kid. My first game was Pokémon Stadium. I remember always playing it with my father and my childhood friend. We would pretend to have actual battles outside and we'd just live in the moment of it all.

Now I'm 18 and I don't have close friends that stuck around with it. I just play online now.

I think the only way I can bring childhood moments back to life is if I have kids of my own and show them what I had played.

See, that's the most tragic thing. You didn't have to be 9 or 10 when Pokemon first came out to enjoy it. Hell, even if you were like 4 or 5, you still would have easily been around for the craze. You were off by just a couple years, my friend. The people born from 1991-1994 got the best deal when it came to Pokemon. They were able to play it as kids, enjoy the craze, and STILL play it later on and enjoy the shit outta it. You '95-'97ers weren't able to enjoy shit.

No movie was ever aired on theaters, card collecting and trading was never a thing, and watching the cartoon wasn't common either i still did it though

How many of you who went through the craze dropped off at Crystal/Gen III? I remember looking at the starters and the Regis and thinking how strange and unappealing they looked, plus I was pissed off about no Gen II-III transfer as I still had a legit Mew.

When D/P was current I went back and got Emerald, and by this point the Pokémon designs really grew on me.

I stopped after Gold and got back in with Emerald. I didn't even know there was more Pokemon after Johto until I went on some forum and saw a pic of Flygon as someone's avatar.

I played all pokemon games in order, and I remember first seeing stuff about Gen 3, I was shitting bricks every day over how excited I was. Once I finally got Ruby I enjoyed that fucker so fucking much. Don't get me wrong, playing Silver was great, but to me the pokemon and the area was a huge upgrade. I thought Hoenn was fantastic and had great replay value.

I'm 19 and the first pokemon game I played was Fire Red, followed by DPPT. When I was little I enitially thought it was lame but then I got into card collecting.

It actually wasn't until Jr. High and highschool that I met other besides my brother who enjoyed Pokemon.

Gen. 4 was my golden age of Pokémon. Eyeryone in the school had TCG of Pokémon and the Pokémon games. (but i think gen 1 was the best time for a Pokémon fan)

Looks like I'm the oldest one in here so far. Born in '88, I'll be 27 in July. I have to say, being 10 when Pokemon exploded in popularity the world over was quite an amazing experience. It's the whole reason I'm still a fan of the franchise today. As a kid I thought it was going to be a phenomenon here to stay and refused to believe it was a fad. Sadly, the popularity died off sometime during gen 3 while I was in high school. It does make me a little disappointing that a lot of people here missed it when it was literally everywhere and everyone was talking about it. It shaped a lot of my fondest memories. That doesn't mean that younger generations can't make their own memories of this series though. Sure it may not be a huge thing now, but kids will keep making their own memories of this franchise and I don't see that stopping anytime soon. Pokemon as a franchise still exists and gets new games that are enjoyed by a lot of people, that in itself is pretty awesome. Reading through this thread just shows that even though the golden era is over, the spirit of it still exists even in those that missed it.

from gradeschool thru highschool and college and beyond my friends and I have played and watched the series from the beginning. but unfortunately some people move on, or judge. it makes me sad to think about, I wish everyone else would give it a chance, its still really great
