I have no nostalgia for Gen 2. It was neither new or iconic like gen 1, nor as well polished as gen 3.

Gen 2 felt like a more complete and polished Gen 1 to me, because it went out of its way to fix everything that Gen 1 was lacking.

the only thing really missing was the physical/special split to make it a flawless update to Gen 1. but I'll give the benefit of the doubt and believe that game boy mechanics were completely up to speed to make that happen.

all in all excellent gen, and definitely a personal favorite.

I think it was both new and iconic. Maybe it didn't leave as lasting of an impression as gen 1, but that was the flagship so its hard to compete.

Unfortunately a lot of the apricorn balls were actually way broken and didn't work as intended due to programming errors, but the effort was cool. Gen 2 only tried to be the complete pokemon experience at the time, and that's why it was so great.

I just played through this on my phone and I gotta say I was underwhelmed. Probably because I didn't play it as a kid. Although, I did play Red when it came out, which I also recently played, and it wasn't as magical as I remember either. Gen III a best.

I don't deny that GSC were great. I bought Silver and Crystal back in the days. Silver was also the first time I actually took time to get some of my Pokemon to level 100.

But I'm slightly more nostalgic of Ruby, which was a huge step forward gaming-wise.

Still, no other version to this day (remakes aside) had the guts give you a reminiscent kick by granting you access to the former region. Sure there were lots of weird things (huge landscape changes in 3 years, fucked up things like the island destroyed by the volcano, and so on) but it was fucking good to go back to the old region and meet your former player in a clash of titans.

Gen 2 was the Gen 1 that Gen 1 should have been. It isn't so much its own Gen as it is something of an expansion pack.

That said, it was an excellent generation and yes, Johto is the single most idyllic location in the series. Absolutely comfy as fuck.

Then again, gen 1 has the superior selection of adventurous route music so it kind of evens out. Overall, I still have more nostalgia for both gen 1 and 3 as a whole; gen 1 for the sense of wonder and discovery only your first experience with the games can give you, and gen 3 because that's when my interest in Pokémon was at its peak and because I still pine for Netbattle and the gen 3 metagame. I will never have as much fun with Pokémon as I did back in the Netbattle days.

I could never quite pinpoint what made Johto feel the way it did. It just had a certain vibe to it that felt so good. It's not nostalgia (even tho I do feel it), it's just...idk.
