I didn't put much time into Platinum as I had already played Pearl (Platinum is much better than DP of course), while HGSS hit my nostalgia in all the right ways; it actually kept everything from the originals (except the slots but we at least got Voltorb Flip), it kept all the bonus content from Crystal, brought back cut areas, gave me Platinum's Frontier which I hadn't fully finished exploring yet as well as Gym Leader rematches (which were annoying to have to collect but once I got all 16 together marathoning them was super fun), it was the closest I got to completing my Pokédex since Gen 1 until I went out and finished the whole thing in Gen 6, all my friends got the game so there was a mild renaissance of Pokémania when the game came out, it was just a great time to be a fan.
I honestly don't know whether Pt or HGSS are better, they're both great, but I just had more fun with HGSS when it came out due to it hitting all the right factors like nostalgia and the Pokémon craze mildly returning.
