Totodile is the worst choice because:

1: Your rival gets Chikorita, which totally doesn't fit his edgy and dark personality. Silver needs either Feraligatr or Typhlosion at the end, to fit his team. For the sake of canonity/lore/perfection/OCD.

2. There are TONS of water Pokémon, they are all over the place. They are the most common types of Pokémon. Picking a water starter is redundant.

Cyndaquil is the best choice, followed by Chikorita.

Go on the route going up from the first one. You can catch Phanpy and Spearow there. Phanpy's basically Sandshrew 2.0, but with 120 Attack/Defense. You already know Spearow (I hope)

Johto dex has a wide variety of shit you can get.

It's gen 1 that had a poor limited distribution. You could only get Onix after the 3rd gym, while in gen 2 you can get Onix before the 1st gym.

But Wooper and Sandshrew are nowhere to be found. I keep running on Hoppip, Rattata, Ekans and Bellsprout on route 32.

Kadabra can learn all elemental punches, which is great because his sp.atk is high and all the punches (fire/thunder/ice) are sp.atk.
Hypno is better for status/utility moves like sleep and disable.

In Goldenrod just visit all houses and talk to people. There's a big market you can shop there, and trade for a Machop. There's also a gamecorner when you can play the slots and win Dratini/Cubone and stuff.

Don't take on the gym yet. Just go north in the next route all the way north untill you see a wiggling tree (Sudowoodo) blocking the way. Just get exp from trainers and participate in the Bug Contest if you want. When you've grinded everything, then do the Gym in Goldenrod. It's a very hard gym leader, alot of people have trouble with her! After you beat her, talk to a woman to give you a 'squirtbottle' so you can fight/catch Sudowoodo and move on to the next city.

If you're emulating, get the Crystal Emu Edition romhack.

You can get all 251 Pokémon without trading/cheats. The Japanese Celebi event is also restored.
