What if Smogon decided to to the truly insane and quick-banned Charizard as a whole? Some shit about too many sets or "team building pressure". They would claim Z is not the problem, it's all three of them. The ban would be fucking hilarious, I would really want to see the fallout of that.

It'll beat what can counter X or Y and vice-versa so that first turn is going to be hell.

Blobs? STAB Dynamic punch or it better be near full health or else X will kill it
Bulky grounds? Enjoy getting burned or eating a drought fire blast
Dragons like Dragonite? Wouldn't want to risk getting hit by Dragon Claw from X or getting burned
Azumarill or bulky waters like Slowbro? Burned/confused or solar beam from Y

Even after evolving (and one of the enemy's pokemon already got killed or crippled), it's rock neutral with reliable recovery (while praying for confuse hacks) and good speed so it can come in and do work easily. It can even boost. Banned after a week.

Inferno/Dynamic Punch/ Dragon Rush /Roost would be hilarious. It's fast enough so that after you confuse the enemy, you can just dragon rush to try and flinch it too for Flinch/confuse bullshit.

Fire/Dragon/Fighting is pretty good coverage as well that's only walled by Azumarill who won't like being burned.

The fact he didn't get two megas still makes it count. Hell, that would still count for the 3rd gen starter megas. Charizard getting a second mega for absolutely no reason was and will always be a fucking slap to the face to everyone who didn't use him until they give every other starter two megas. It's favoritism of the worst kind.
