The Mystery Dungeon series are my 5th favorite game of all time. I can't even imagine trying to recruit them all. It's going to be a fucking blast

I grew up with this series, man. There's a fuckload of content and characters to play as. This will probably be my personal GOTY.

It depends. There's a free emulator, but it's pretty shit and actually really slow. It might work for PMD, but I haven't tried it.

On the other hand, if you're willing to pay, DraStic is REALLY good at emulating, and is just better all around, and can actually handle 3D.

One of the composers for PMD1 and PMD2. He now makes music for BEMANI (Konami; Beatmania IIDX and their other rhythm games). His own music carries a lot of PMD1/2 flair which disappeared in PMD3 so I think he was the main composer. I'd love to hear the old music style of his make a return.

I have a bit of a fanboner for him.

Yeah I agree on that, but for what it's worth I still like going through the main game every now and then. The DLC wasn't too crazy expensive for the most part though (and it some dungeons were initially offered for free), so I never minded it much

my biggest qualm for GtI's dungeons is that they weren't challenging, they were just there so you could recruit all other pokemon. I wouldn't mind a Zero Island-esque DLC, but not a DLC pack of 5 Oran Forests.

As someone who never thought much of the core gameplay of PMD, I actually enjoyed Gates more than the other games.

I'm not going to be too bothered about reduced content since I could never bring myself to play past the credits in blue or past the Darkrai event in Explorers anyway. Gates's town building, v-wave, mysteriosity post credits thing and move levelling helped break up the monotony better than the other games, and the levelling-while-in-base thing fixed the stupidly grindy nature of the other games.

Story was also considerably better than the other games due to its characters, even if it suffered from tell not show quite a bit. The Igglybuff and Grovyle Sky episodes are better though, and maybe even the Bidoof one.

It wasn't just that feature that made it less grindy. The IQ system in the other games was a double edged sword for me, as while I liked all the different abilities that you can get, including ones that are situational, making you think about which ones you want, gummi grinding was an absolute chore and a half.

I appreciated what they did with Explorers, but the 100 floor dungeons were actually challenging, making you focus a lot on survival as well as rescuing. Honestly Buried Relic is still to this day one of my favorite dungeons, and not just because of it's based BGM.

I always go exploring with the following:

Guys I think I just discovered something, I used a save state in emulating the game, and before and after I loaded the state and went up the stairs it loaded the same floor in the dungeon, complete with same items and same initial pokemon on floor. Someone give it a shot and tell me if they see it too.

Levels mean very little in Mystery Dungeon. Raise your stats with gummis to make your mons into actual powerhouses.

There's more than just petrify that works.

The Warp, Slumber, and that pause one works too. Hell even Decoy orb will work in some situations if you have nothing else. Or you can eat a pure seed and go right to the stairs. Discharge or Heatwave works great too if you want the exp. Plenty of options to get around a monster house.

Orbs are OP though.

If you don't want that, anything with Ominous Wind. It feels more accurate than any other room move, but it can up stats with every single pokemon you hit

Blizzard is wildly inaccurate. Powder Snow is actually the most accurate room-hitting move there is.
There are other factors, though. Concentrator can boost accuracy and make them more likely to hit, off the top of my head, Flygon with Earth Power sounds useful.
