There are other games but other formulas seem tio suck so no.

Nigga those games didn't forgo any formula, they were logical escalations of their respective series.

Better examples would have been Yoshi's Island and Majora's Mask.

You don't need to completely overhaul the series, just add a small change to the formula. Anything, even other JRPG cliches would be welcome at this point

>change the gym leaders to a series of tournaments

Forget the gyms.
The trainer is a "chosen one" who must go to "8" temples to rescue "8" crystals from the hands of whatever the bad guy is, who wants to resurrect some other badder guy from its 1,000 or 2,000 year sleep.
And your village of origin is destroyed in one point of the game, your father was some kind of hero that dealt before with the same bad guy you're trying to stop... and failed horribly.
And the legendaries are the Paracelsus' elemental spirits.

Expect a lot of cheesy cutscenes and a cringeworthy voice acting.
