Besides, naming the game θ would be awful from a marketing perspective if people want to look the game up somewhere, most keyboards doesn't even have Greek letters.Meaning that they would be referred to as Pokémon r and pokémon theta, which doesn't sound like a pair at all.Theta sounds way more interesting than r, unlike most other pairs which are more even.
Besides, X and Y have many more uses than to just referring to coordinates (and I'm fairly sure the kinds that know what platinum is also know about cartesian coordinates. I'm fairly sure many kids have heard toe expression alpha omega as well, while not necessary knowing its meaning.), the combination of r and θ are exceptionally used in coordinate systems and nothing more
as far as I know, making it very alien to kids. Not to mention that the concept is a whole lot harder to explain to them, unlike any previous title.
