You could do things like foreshadow characters or have hints of stuff that connects to the next generation (like a scene of Oak visiting Colress in prison to ask about his research in a "certain" land or show Caitlin before she gits gud and Elite 4 ready, etc,.)
Technically the reason why we don't have Japanese and English characters anymore is because 4Kids insisted cultural gaps would be alienating to the series, so they dropped most hints of real world culture outside the games. Would have been interesting to have bits of full English communication for Unova or lines of French for Kalos but the former would be a bitch to dub.
Can't fight brand recognition though, Ash and Pikachu are in it for life unless Masuda decides it's time to stop.
Not many recall, but Yamauchi thought the series would stop at some point
