These are very nicely designed but I think the R/B/G colouring is too muted, possible exception of the bat. The colouring of starters tends to be quite saturated.

The grass fire water combo teaches basic weakness and resistance concepts to need players, as it it probably the easiest to understand. I doubt they ever break from this idea.

It's also weak to the Water/Fighting starter. Worst trio imaginable.

I'd say a pretty fair balance is Grass/Steel, Fire/Ground, Water/Rock.

I felt you on the overdesigned part, even as I was doing it, but I appreciate the based as fuck comment.

it's a bit hard to simplify from something like pic related, but I'll keep at it. maybe designing the first two stages could give me some insight into simplifying.

for me, i would say only have one line on neck/upper back, probably the wavy line, make it white. get rid of the green electricity on the back, if you want lightning, put it on the hooves. I can barely tell thats fire too. its a combination of the colors and how you drew it. try a few different styles?

lightning hooves is a much better option, thanks for that. I'll simplify the lines as well.

for me, fire has always been a difficult thing to draw, but I kindof like the idea of keeping the fire white/yellow/blue to reference the painted mane

also, any extra lines that are colored in orange along with the surrounding area were originally planned on being white. instead, I colored them in and they would be removed in cleaned up art.
